Kay Nielsen (1886 - 957), a Danish illustrator, was one of the most celebrated artists of his time, and one of the small group of elite book illustrators associated with what has become to be known as 'the golden age of illustration'. As an artist he was influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, Sidney Sime and the Art Nouveau movement. His most notable work is to be found as the fairy tale illustrations for Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, along with the work executed for a collection of ancient Nordic folktales translated from the Norwegian in the mid-19th century by Peter C. Asbjörnsen and Jörgen Moe, entitled 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon'. Nielsen's work also became known via his collaborative involvement with Disney for whom he produced numerous sketches and drawings. In recent years he has re-gained substantial popularity.
